The East Flatbush community united for the 13th annual “Not in My Hood’ march against gun violence.

The event began with an emotional gathering on Church Avenue where the names of mothers of sons killed by gun violence were read aloud.

Natasha Christopher lost her son Akeal to gun violence 11 years ago. She says she wants to make sure other children can reach their full potential and not become victims.

"I'm going to do this every single year because our children deserve to grow up and have a safe summer,” she said.

They then took to the streets to march, chant and pray with neighbors. The families were also joined by elected officials and community organizations to demand an end to gun violence.

"We are here today to say that we are bringing an end to this scourge on our communities, and if it takes us being out here every single day until we reach that goal then that is what we will do,” said Rep. Yvette D. Clarke.

The march ended with a resource fair connecting community members to jobs and work opportunities over the summer. Assemblywoman Monique Chandler-Waterman says access to resources is essential to keep young people away from gun violence.

The event also highlighted the importance of legislation to help communities impacted by violence. Chandler-Waterman highlighted her bill that will redefine the meaning of mass shooting in New York state. The bill is currently waiting for the governor's signature.
