A fire broke out early Wednesday morning at Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, damaging the building that houses equipment for the 36-hole golf course.
Crews contained the flames to the maintenance area, which holds mowers, sprayers and rollers. No one was hurt, and the banquet halls and clubhouse were not affected. They remained open for business.
Owner Christopher Schiavone said the fire started around 1 a.m. and praised firefighters for preventing it from spreading to chemical storage areas. Schiavone added that other local country clubs have already offered support to help Forsgate stay operational until equipment can be replaced.
On the fairways and driving ranges, it was business as usual. Golfers practiced their drives, a true testament to the overwhelming support of the Monroe community.
“Stll trying to figure out what happened. No one got hurt that’s the most important thing,” said golfer Amit Setya. “I’m glad everyone’s helping out and I’m sure we would help out as well in return.”
“All we got was the phone call this morning from our security company saying hey there’s a fire,” said Mike Furey, Forsgate’s head golf professional.
“We’ve had numerous reps and companies reach out to us. We’ve already gotten three pieces of equipment delivered here and by days end we’ll be out mowing the grass again,” Furey said.
“It’s fine. They're cutting grass and everything. Putts roll, that’s all we want around here,” said golfer Bob Cunningham.
Police and fire crews are investigating the cause but say that nothing about the fire appears suspicious.
