There is no chance of a "White Christmas," according to forecasters, but holiday travelers were met with plenty of rain on Christmas Eve.
With the rain falling steadily throughout the day Wednesday, commuters still took to local roads to travel to their holiday destinations. According to AAA, a record 98 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday season, which is an increase of 4 percent from last year. Nearly 91 percent of that number will be out on the road driving.
In New York City, gas prices averaged about $2.90 per gallon Wednesday. AAA officials say the decreased price is part of the reason why so many people are traveling by car, even with the rain.
"Better rain than snow, right?" said Sam Vero of Bergen Beach. "We all want a white Christmas, but not when you have to drive in it."
As heavy rains and fog blanketed the city, slick roads caused lengthy traffic delays. But the rain is expected to give way to only cloudy skies on Christmas Day.
