Supporters of a former NYPD officer who was convicted in the shooting death of an unarmed man in a public-housing building have formed a legal defense fund.
Peter Liang was convicted of manslaughter earlier this month. He had been on patrol with his partner at the Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York in 2014 when Liang's gun discharged in a dark stairwell. The bullet ricocheted and struck 28-year-old Akai Gurley, who died.
Some residents, including Gurley's family, publicly praised Liang's conviction. But Liang's supporters say the former rookie officer and Gurley are both victims of the events of that night. They believe that Liang was used as a scapegoat.
People rallied in Brooklyn Heights on Feb. 20 on behalf of Liang. The outpouring of support has also come from around the world, helping to fund Liang's legal appeal. An attorney and Liang's family will manage that trust.
A friend of Liang says the former officer is overwhelmed and thankful for the support.
An attorney for Liang says his client is doing well and is feeling confident that his appeal will prevail.
