A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday for the new Maimonides Emergency Medical Center.
An emergency medical center is coming to aid residents living in the Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst areas.
"Giving patients in these communities access to emergency care which is best when its timely is important,” says Kenneth Gibbs, the chief executive officer of Maimonides Medical Center.
The center will offer services for adult, pediatric and psychiatric patients..
"Your child breaks a bone, you're in a car accident, you're experiencing chest pain, an emergency department in your neighborhood can be the difference between life and death,” says Josephine Imperatrice, the vice president of Nursing for Emergency Department and Psychiatry.
The off-campus emergency department will take over Victory Medical Hospital, which is less than two miles from the Maimonides Medical Center. It will include 15 patient care areas, a resuscitation room, an observation area, x-rays and CAT scans on site.
“This could be beneficial for us because it gives us another outlet that we can use,” says Anthony Napoli, the president of Bravo Ambulance Services. “The area has been underutilized since 2008 when Victory originally closed, and it gives everyone another option as to where to go for emergency services."
Residents from the area told News 12 they are excited for the opening of the center.
"I think it’s a good hub for that… it’s close to the highway, close to the Army base. It probably can do a lot of good to serve the communities,” says Josh Weiner.
Maimonides hopes to open this location by early 2022.
Officials say they also plan on opening a doctors’ pavilion on 9th Avenue between 48th and 49th streets to offer a full range of services for the community.
