Students are celebrating an academic achievement at Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy.
New Principal Dr. Michael Wiltshire made a lot of changes to the school, which is known for its academic struggles. A ninth period was implemented each day and a Saturday academy with tutoring was created to help students catch up.
Now, more than twice as many seniors are on track to graduate on time. The school says 90 students are on track, compared to 40 in the first semester.
The changes are part of the school renewal program. A list of 94 schools around the city were forced to make the changes by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
As part of the whole transformation, the mayor says the teachers at Boys and Girls High School and Automotive High School will have to reapply for their jobs next year.
