Parents and police gathered Thursday for an annual student safety meeting in Nassau County.

The event was not planned because of the Texas school shooting, but Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder emphasized active shooter preparedness.

He says they have stepped up patrols at all 54 schools in Nassau County.

The police commissioner is asking the public to do their part.

"We're asking the public--get involved in your kids life, get into their social media world, speak to them about what's going on in their schools," Ryder says. "Because we need to hear it."

Ryder says it is not uncommon for teenagers to make false threats against schools after mass shooting incidents.

He told News 12 Nassau County received 10 false threats against schools on Thursday alone.

Ryder says parents should report any threats they see.
