Commissioner Jessica Tisch
announced new policies to expand the New York City Police Department’s recruitment efforts to strengthen academic and physical training.
The three-part plan will reduce the number of college credits required to enter the Police Academy from 60 credits to only 24.
An assessment by the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) also determined that the completion of the six-month NYPD Police Academy recruit training is equivalent to 45 college credits instead of the previous 36.
The plan is also reinstating the longstanding requirement of completing a 1.5-mile run in less than 14 minutes and 21 seconds to ensure physical fitness.
The NYPD is one of the only big-city police force that still has a college credit requirement.
