Residents who oppose a controversial rezoning plan for East New York are stepping up pressure on their councilman to vote against it as the City Council nears a scheduled vote.
Protesters rallied outside Councilman Rafael Espinal's office Wednesday to decry the affordable housing plan.
They say the plan is not affordable enough for low-income residents in what is one of the city's poorest neighborhoods.
Police arrested several protesters, but Espinal has already said he would vote against the measure if lawmakers didn't agree to add more affordability into the plan.
If the plan goes through, it guarantees half of the 6,500 units built in the rezoned area will be affordable.
City Council is expected to vote on the plan next Wednesday.
