Activists and elected officials from across the borough gathered in Flatbush Monday to rally support for thousands of Haitians facing deportation from the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican government gave undocumented immigrants until last Wednesday to submit papers under new rules to legalize their status. Many have claimed that long lines and an impossible deadline will leave 300,000 Haitians facing deportation.
Some of those waiting to file their paperwork say they were turned away after 24 hours of waiting.
The supporters rallied outside St. Mark's United Methodist Church in an effort to bring light to the concern.
Councilman Mathieu Eugene has created an online petition to urge the U.S. government to step in and help resolve the issue.
