Residents are calling for security changes after an attack at a public housing facility in East New York.
Police say a 45-year-old woman was assaulted by an unknown male at around 12:30 p.m. on July 4 at NYCHA's Vandalia Houses. Her assailant reportedly followed her into an elevator and punched her in the face repeatedly once the doors closed.
The suspect stole her necklace and cellphone. The victim and many of her neighbors are asking the housing authority for security cameras and more patrols. A security guard is on duty from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. For the rest of the day, residents say they are unprotected.
The Vandalia Houses are home to many senior citizens, neighbors say.
Residents are asking for surveillance cameras in the laundry room, the sides of the building and on each floor. There are currently no security cameras in the facility.
A NYCHA spokesperson says the housing authority is assessing security measures at the complex and hopes to work with other government agencies to strengthen resident safety.
No arrests have been made in the attack.
