The family of a woman shot by a stray bullet while sitting on her front porch filed a lawsuit Thursday against the city and the NYPD.
The lawsuit alleges that Denise Gay's wrongful death came at the hands of police. Gay, who was just days away from celebrating her 56th birthday, was struck by a stray bullet during a police-involved gunfight last summer.
Although not confirmed, the family's attorney says there is enough evidence to show the fatal bullet came from police.
Gay's brother says he just wants to find out what happened, why it happened and hopes it leads to better training for NYPD officers.
The family's lawyer says it could be two to three years before the case goes to court.
