On a stoop in the heart of Bed-Stuy, the sounds of music, laughter, and community signal more than just a block party; it’s the launch of STooPS, a celebration of creativity, culture, and connection.
“What we really try to do through our summer festivals is highlight, amplify, and honor the traditions of Bed-Stuy voices and people,” says Kendra Ross, founder and director of STooPS.
For over 12 years, STooPS -- founded by Ross and creatively led by Pia Monique Murat -- has been a driving force in bridging the gap between art and community. From live performances and neighborhood festivals to wellness workshops and educational programs, STooPS makes it all accessible - often at little to no cost.
“STooPS is community. It’s connection, it’s art, and it’s love - because you gotta spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way,” Ross adds with a smile.
And while the music plays and plates are passed, STooPS offers something deeper: Guided tours through Bed-Stuy’s storied past. These walks serve as living tributes to the neighborhood’s legacy, giving residents and visitors alike a chance to experience its rich cultural roots.
“STooPS is bringing all of that history back,” says Pia Monique Murat. “If you think that’s valuable, come out and support, so we can continue to provide it.”
The mission doesn’t stop at the stoop. Ross encourages anyone inspired by the work to reach out; because STooPS is ready to bring its magic directly to schools, community centers, and even your block. “We have an incredible team of teaching artists,” says Ross. “Through our education and curation programs, we can bring some STooPS magic to you.”
As the fall season approaches, STooPS is already looking ahead, with pop-up events planned for the holidays, and their next event - The Black Futures Festival, a collaboration with the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, set for February 2026.
