A new study conducted by two city agencies has discovered that homeless residents in Brooklyn and citywide are dying at twice the rate of other New Yorkers.
The Department of Homeless Services in cooperation with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found out that the homeless women are at a high risk of dying from AIDS. Homeless men are at a high risk of dying from substance abuse.
Homeless advocates say they hope these findings will prompt the city agencies to bring services such as AIDS testing and detoxification programs into the shelter system. Currently homeless shelters do not provide such services.
