Transit workers rallied outside MTA headquarters in Manhattan Thursday to demand passengers be allowed to board through all doors.
Representatives of TWU Local 100, the union that organized the rally, say that the current system of collecting and monitoring fares puts the bus driver in direct conflict with passengers -- often leading to harassment and threats.
In addition, the union says buses spend 22 percent of their time waiting at stops as passengers board one at a time.
The union says the solution would be to allow riders to enter and pay through all of a bus's doors. It points to San Francisco, which has already implemented such a policy, and Boston, which is testing one now.
