Officers in Sunset Park are being accused of using excessive force on a pregnant woman.
A new video posted on Facebook by a group called El Grito appears to show the police-involved fight near Fifth Avenue and 41st Street early Saturday morning.
The video allegedly shows officers struggling with and forcing down someone who appears to be pregnant. Another woman, Mercedes Hidalgo, approaches and is apparently shoved by an officer.
Sandra Amezquita is five months pregnant and claims she is the one that police pushed to the ground in the video. She also has pictures of marks that were left on her stomach after she says she was hit by a police baton.
A spokesperson for the NYPD says the incident is being investigated by internal affairs. The department says that officers were trying to arrest a man for possession of a knife when several family members tried to intervene.
The male suspect, 17-year-old Jhohan Lemos, is Amezquita's son. Lemos was eventually charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Two others were taken into custody, and charged with assault and resisting arrest.
The family is now asking the Brooklyn district attorney to open up a criminal investigation to look into the actions of the officers.
The family and their supporters will also be marching down to the 72nd Precinct on Saturday to speak out against the incident.
