The MTA is warning drivers that if they try to avoid paying tolls on bridges and tunnels that they will pay the price.
Janno Lieber, CEO of the MTA, says the agency has been making an extra effort to crack down on those dodging tolls, especially those using fake license plates as they cross bridges.
“If you try with the fake plates, you’re going to get busted and it’s going to be a lot worse than paying a toll on the Verrazzano Bridge,” said Lieber. “… when we get to congestion pricing, you might lose the car so please don’t mess around. Pay the toll.”
Lieber adds that on Staten Island, drivers have to pay less than a subway fare for toll fees, but that some violators from the borough owe thousands in unpaid fees.
