A teenage boy was killed in a late-night shooting in Canarsie, police say.
The NYPD says Javel Lawton, 15, was found outside the Bay View Houses on 102nd Street with a gunshot wound to the torso around 9 p.m. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Family friends say the teen grew up in the Bay View Houses and later moved a few miles away. Sources say Lawton was a student at the Canarsie Educational Campus and that his classmates are receiving support.
"It's very tragic. And he was very young, I was told. And that shouldn't happen to no kid... send my condolences to the family," said B.J. Howard and Brian Jimenez, two students from Canarsie Educational Campus.
The shooting took place near P.S. 272. It's still not clear why he was shot or if he knew the person who shot him. The shooter is still at large.
This is the second homicide victim in New York City so far in 2024.
