Proposed Islandia mixed-use development draws questions from community

A proposed mixed-use development that would bring more than 360 apartments, a 50-room hotel and retail space to Islandia moved forward Tuesday after a public hearing that drew about 50 people.
The proposal for the site at Motor Parkway and Veterans Memorial Highway also includes a separate residential building for people 55 and older and a parking garage. If approved, it would be the first mixed-use development of its kind in the village.
Only one resident spoke during the public hearing, raising concerns about traffic along Veterans Memorial Highway and questioning whether any of the apartments would be affordable.
Werlhens Francois, of Central Islip, said young adults are increasingly being priced out of Long Island and that the proposal lacks details about affordable housing.
Mayor Allan Dorman said he personally supports the concept, calling it an attractive project that could help bring families to the village.
The Hauppauge Fire District also voiced concerns about the project. Commissioner Louis Zara cited issues including building access, overhead restrictions and hydrant locations.
The developer’s attorney declined to comment after the hearing.
No vote was taken Tuesday. If approved, the developer said construction would take at least 24 months to complete.
